The introduction will provide the basic objective of LRED demonstrating the importance of regional competitiveness and the requirement to develop the regional sector and business potentials. Not only businesses are competing but also regions. Based on literature and case examples from other countries this lecture will provide an insight of other regions in the world that have followed strong efforts to improve the local and regional business climate and to develop advantages in specific sectors relevant in the region.

The students of the Academy will have to do an analysis in their regions during June and July 2016. From the 90 students at the Academy, around 55 will do this analysis on local and regional economic development (LRED) in their regions. It was decided with the teachers and professors of the Academy to offer an introduction course to the students in which they are enabled to learn the available tools for analysis as well as the basic LRED aspects. 5 lectures and 5 seminar sessions are panned in the time frame from the 30th of May to the 4th of June.
